Did you know that “at the turn of the century, most of the fatty acids in the diet were either saturated or monounsaturated, primarily from butter, lard, tallows, coconut oil and small amounts of olive oil.”
~page 10, Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon.
And that saturated fats – which we’ve been told are bad for our health – are in reality good for us…
How?
They make up at least 50% of a cell’s membrane; play an important part in the health of our bones and enhance the immune system.
And our yummy coconut oil is 92% saturated fat!
You can find more information on the health benefits of coconut oil here; more info at the Alternative Healthzine and the Wise Geek’s take on it as well.
How do we have our coconut?
One yummy way is in our delish Summer Coconut Slushie.
What do you need?
1x 400ml can organic coconut cream
400mls full-fat milk
1x generous tablespoon of organic honey
Place half the can of coconut cream, milk and honey in to large cylinder. Whiz with hand-held blender stick until all combined.
This amount is enough for the 3 of us (Daughter, Son and myself) to have a slushie.
We have this cool machine that shaves ice for us, so we 2/3 fill a glass with our coconut milk concoction, then shave ice in on top.
Mix ice through and enjoy!
It’s great as a hot-afternoon treat – full of goodness and deliciously filling.
Why not try it for yourself and tell me what you think!
